Hunting Watches

All-original Two-tone 18-size Model 9 Seth Thomas

$695.00
Pay with PayPal or a debit/credit card

There was no truer symbol of finance and business before the advent of Rolls-Royce and Pierce-Arrow automobiles than a gold hunting pocket watch. On a quiet night this 120-year-old survivor can tell you of times past, during the days of Guglielmo Marconi's new wireless and William Howard Taft's presidency. Don't miss this piece of mechanical art made back when the phrase "Made in America" still meant something.

Watch Description

Known as the New Eagle line, the Seth Thomas Models 8 and 9 were direct replacements of the Old Eagle series, the Models 6 and 7. Why the factory made the change is not known, since both were 18-size, but the newer versions were slightly thinner and came with Breguet hairsprings, making them more accurate timekeepers. Roughly 9,000 of the two-tone hunting Grade 37 Model 9s were made, beginning around 1902. The pairing of a Model 9 with an Illinois gold-filled case seems to have been the norm back in the day, since nearly all of the survivors have been reported in this combination, and this example is certainly entirely original, including the glass crystal. It's been thoroughly cleaned, oiled and timed with an NOS mainspring installed for its next owner. All seven of its jewels are still intact on very clean plates with the gilding of the two-tone portion still bright. The Roman dial is correct and flawless behind light blued spade hands, and the 10-year gold-filled Illinois case is exceptionally nice for a lower-grade hunting case, with very little wear, no dents, an unsigned cuvette, a sharp crown, and a tight bow. Matching watch chain and display stand are included.

Early 18-size Grade 97 Model 2 Seth Thomas Hunter

Seth Thomas carries a unique heritage, founded by a clockmaker who was born just after the Revolutionary War. His company began making high-grade pocket watches in 1885, the only American clockmaker to attempt it, producing some of the most gorgeous designs of our railroad era, spanning nearly thirty years until the outbreak of World War I.

Watch Description

Seth Thomas's 18-size hunting Model 2 was launched sometime in 1888, a skeletonized 3/4-plate design with a graceful cantilever over the center wheel pivot that continued the use of the long pallet escapement from the Model 1, eventually available in all of the finishes that the factory offered at the time. It debuted at SN 25101 with two separate blocks of a hundred nickel variants each, with the 15-jewel gilt adjusted Grade 97 being introduced for the first time at SN 28001, making this piece the eighth one in grade produced out of a total of roughly 1380. It's been fully restored with all of its original jewels still intact on clean plates with a complete regulator assembly and a full set of blued screws. The Roman-numeral dial has a light vertical hairline behind matching light spade hands, and it's housed in a fairly heavy 3-ounce unmarked coin-silver hunter case with tight hinges, a blank shield and cuvette, a tight bow, a sharp crown, and an NOS glass crystal. Matching watch chain and display stand are included.

Scarce 16-jewel Grade 508 Model 2 Seth Thomas

Most people can't conceive of using anything but their phone for telling the time any more, which will make you the center of attention when you pull out this 130-year-old mechanical work of art at the next wedding or graduation. The best part? Knowing that your gold watch will be running long after their plastic phone gets buried in a landfill.

Watch Description

The highest grades within the Model 2 family were the Grade 508 and the Henry Molineux. The Molineux had a slightly higher jewel count and was available in two-tone at the end, but the 508 was adjusted to temperature and positions, while the Molineux was simply marked Adjusted. The 508 is a fairly scarce grade, with some 750 of them made in at least thirteen small runs. The jewel counts were both sixteen and seventeen, and there is no way to know how many of each were made without pulling the dial and checking. This 16-jewel example is a very late one, produced in the last run, which ended at SN 503900, and is an exceptional piece with gold jewel settings and gilded inlay in the plate engravings. It was just restored back to factory specs and all hardware is matching and correct. The Roman-numeral dial has a light vertical hairline behind matching light spade hands, and it's housed in a gold-filled Fahy's hunter case with engine turning on both covers, tight hinges, a blank cuvette, a tight bow, a sharp crown, and an NOS glass crystal.
